Earthed

How many planets are there and what are their names according until 2008?

I'm confused because I hear that Pluto is no longer a planet and that some planets are discovered. Help!

  1. Pluto is the declassified as planet...other remain the same with the same names.....mercury...venus..earth..mars..Jupiter..Neptune..Saturn..Uranus
  2. NASA.gov, and if they don't give you a straight answer then who knows.

  3. in our system Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

    in other systems

Just to name a few, theres about 180 more, but I can't keep up. http://exoplanets.org/planets.shtml

actually higginsdj, your right!!! those where are all the stars. I forgot that I trimmed out the B s in Excel. (that was a lot of work and left me winded)

I'll fix it!!! there! its fixed!!

they are followed with either B's or C's or D's.

b being the 1st planet in the system, c being the 2nd in the system and so on.

The star "could" be considered "A" but it not how stars and other solar systems are cataloged.

(most of these planets are listed as B, I guess because its hard to see the planets and we only really catch the big ones, maybe one or two big planets, like Jupiter, per star. These designations should change over time as our telescopes and planet finding skills evolve)
  4. Eight planets in our solar system.

Poor Pluto! It is a planetoid, one of thousands and thousands and who knows what! The solar system does not just end at Pluto, and some similar rocky ice planetoids exist beyond.
  5. There are 8 planets. Pluto is no more a planet, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet.

The reclassification of Pluto caused a lot of discussion, a polemic situation that continues up to date.

Columns, articles, speeches, people, all have protested strongly to that determination of the IAU.

Lots of books have not been updated on purpose. There are some astronomers that look forward for the next meeting to bring the subject into discussion again.

Children are confused. How come Pluto is not a planet any more? what happened? Pluto disappeared? Pluto moved to another place?

Even teachers don´t know what to say, because they don´t fully understand the reason of his demotion.
  6. What Mercury said - but I think Mercury gave you the parent star designations rather than the planet designations (but I could be wrong)
